When drawing up a contract (for example in employment law), it is accepted practise to use formal legal English terms. These expressions usually have an informal equivalent.

For example:

  1. in lieu = instead eg…»the employee will receive pro-rata payments in lieu of holiday time not taken.»
  2. entitled = permitted eg….»the employee will be entitled to 25 days holiday per year.»
  3. rescind = cancel eg….»this agreement will be rescinded upon any suggestion of breach of confidentiality.»
  4. probationary = trial eg….»this employment contract will be subject to a 6 month probationary period.»
  5. deduction = subtraction from eg…»any annual bonus will be paid gross and subject to deductions.»
