A typical Part 1 essay questions in the Cambridge C1, would be something like:

«In class you have spoken about the benfits of tecnology in schools. Now your teacher wants you to write an essay describing these benefits.» Write about.

  1. technology helping students to become more engaged with the subject.
  2. technology as a way of bringing students together in class.
  3. using technology to improve foreign language learning.

Write 220-260 words describing 2 of these 3 benefits and saying which one is more important.

(you would write about the above topics in paragraphs 2 and 3. Paragraphs 1 and 4 would be the introduction and the conclusion)

Cambridge recommends starting the part 1 essay with an introduction that describes a tendency and asks a question which you can answer in the conclusion. (If you throw in an inversion you will immediately get extra marks).

For example:

Not only is technology advancing very quickley in the workplace but it is also moving ahead in academic settings such as universities. The question we must now ask ourselves is: Do children benefit by accelerating the use of technology in schools?

That is the introduction; in the conclusion we answer the questions in the affirmative and then go on to say which of the 2 benefits we have discussed is the most useful. Eg….

We can categorically answer the question posed in the introduction by saying that children do benefit from the increasing use of technology in schools. The biggest way that they benefit is by becoming more interested in the subject, through videos and tablets rather than just listening to a teacher speaking at the front of the classroom.
