Legal English Vocabulary For Civil Wrongs (Law of Tort).

Different types of Torts (civil wrongs).

1. Negligence (is the most common tort) eg..road accidents-where road users owe a duty of care to other road users.
2. Nuisance. For example when your neighbour stops you from enjoying your property by playing very loud music.
3. Trespass. For example illegally occupying a property or crossing land without permission (eg…no permitted rights of access).
4. Defamation. To speak badly about someone, negatively affecting their reputation. Slander is for spoken and libel for written or recorded (eg..TV/radio).
5. Passing off. Using another»s brand name or logo to sell more products or services. To avoid this, in Spain, you can register a name at The Patents and Trademarks Office.

In all these cases, if the action is successful in court, there will be an award of damages (financial re-compense), a cease and desist notice (stop doing something) or  an order to vacate the premises or to stop accessing the land.
