When expressing regret or a siuation that is impossible to resolve we use the 3rd conditional:
eg…..If i had worked harder at the beginning of my career, i would have been appointed a partner some time ago.
By using inversion we can make it sound more native =
Had I worked harder at the beginning of my career i would have been appointed a partner some time ago.
By using inversion we can make ourselves sound more like a native speaker. We can do the same with the 2nd conditional, when we want to express a possible but unlikely solution.
eg…...If i stayed in the office until 10 every night i would be under consideration for promotion.
More native = Were I to stay in the office until 10 every night, i would be under consideration for promotion.
