Objective: to practise the first and second conditional and learn vocabulary in relation to business tourism, hotels and international cuisine and events.
Activity: 2 teams of 1 to 3 students in each team. Each team represents a city eg.. London and Madrid. The aim (objetivo) is to attract a silicon valley tech company to your city for their annual staff celebration (fiesta anual de empleados).
Preparation:
Part 1: Each team writes out sentences in the first conditional saying what they can offer the tech company if they visit London/Madrid
Eg: If you come to Madrid we will ensure that you enjoy tapas like squid (calamares) and Spanish omelette (tortilla de patata).
When you have you annual company jamboree (reunion internacional de la empresa) in London, we will include free meeting rooms with the hotel space that we book for you.
Part 2: Each team writes out sentences in the second conditional listing the advantages of having the event in their city.
Eg: If you came to Madrid in May/September you would have spectacularly sunny weather.
Unless you celebrated your event in London you would’t benefit from free conference facilities.
Speaking: The teams then spend 2/3 minutes making their presentation expanding on the conditional sentences that they have written out.
Vocabulary (put on the board before the activity):
Meeting rooms
Squid
Spanish omelette
Sunday roast
Conference facilities
Discounts for 100 + delegates
All-inclusive deal
Cost reductions

Additional reductions for multiple nights
After this the judge/teacher decides which team has made the best presentation.
